So I have now done some research and have found that a completely random grouping of people in Pubs in a squad does work even without mic support, just using basic squad commands (squad leader knows what he/she is doing with the almighty wheel) and by playing as a team of people.
To do this I made a "Public" squad and waited for it to fill up with people. As time went on we went from Dominating the matches (domination mode) to outright cloning out the other team over the course of 3 hrs. The squad started as 2 members and grew with each match and was successful. We had squad members from more than one random corp and it was amazing how well everyone who just wanted to play as a team could work together both without comms and without any instructions other than normal squad commands.
We did not proto stomp, we rolled over all the solo players on the other teams. Like a wave of terror they ran fleeing to the hills and tried to snipe us but still we came on strong and persevered. It was like a death squad in some horror film, not even the tanks that they threw at us could stand up to our fury.
Keep in mind this was a completely random group of mercs who all joined a squad and deployed with some simple planning before hand. Punch for ammo, stay together to stay alive, follow squad orders for movement. This is not hard to do guys and really funny how well it worked.
Thank you to all who participated in the application of bullets with me this afternoon. It was a true pleasure I will be running these Public Access Squads on a regular basis, if you want to be part of the "education process" join me in schooling the solos, one match at a time.
How long til this hits PC?

I join a squad, it fills up, most of the time the leader never queues up and everyone leaves. This would happen 9 times out of 10. I think I had a few of you "not like about squad finder types" try and join the squad today. We had just left battle my finger was hovering over the deploy button and bam not even 30 seconds in squad out of squad again. Normally I would say give it 5 mins then find another, ofc sometimes its because the squad lead is typing something in without a keyboard for the new members in squad.
Be aware my squads are run without mic because after over 3 years of running with them I have found that a broken mic is not as good as communication through the tools already built into the game. Check it out give someone a 5 min timer before leaving squad. Sometimes they are getting their dead dog off the road (like i had to this summer) and can't hit the deploy button while doing so.

I believe the reason for our success this afternoon was that everyone who joined came together because they wanted to work as a team rather than run and gun solo.

The reasons to join the squad are twofold, one you have people who are there to assist you, working toward common goals with the interest in following the squad objectives as the lead puts them out for a better return on SP and time invested. Two if you talk before deployment and discuss how the squad will move you know what is supposed to happen and can fit yourself into a group that allows you to do better by complementing a variety of play styles.
I'm sorry you don't like the format, it is what we have here, I try not to leave my squad mates for dead....

I believe the reason for our success this afternoon was that everyone who joined came together because they wanted to work as a team rather than run and gun solo. I don't think I would have ever bought a mic or stuck with Dust without auto squading. I think you should still be able to set up a squad. Solo players would be thrown into a squad. As much as that is a nice idea, maybe the solo player just wants to do his own thing and solo, its perfectly fine for them to do that, some of the best players I know are awesome solo players, who don't do teamwork the way a squad does but rather contribute to the team synergy and stealth around dropping links and sniping or running tank.
For those guys who prefer the solo life there is no "fire from the heavens" or backup, this is the education that needs to happen, that it is better with a squad or team. The reason being is that without knowing that they need to be a team member. For new players who don't know how to squad up this can be a bit painful but works to encourage the behaviour. It rewards the team player and can punish the solo artist but due to all the complaints of proto stomping on the forums I tend to believe this is what is happening.
Many corps have player who have lost interest and there are not adequate numbers to put a full squad together anymore or yet depending on the fluxx of a corp or maybe even in one or two timezones. Those people who don't have guys to get in a squad with will bounce around doing solos and then log for the night. It sucks playing by yourself, these Public Access Squads that I run will hopefully encourage more people to do this on a regular basis, come out squad with some randoms just because you need a team. Those who want to be there I expect know why a squad is important and can see the benefit of teamwork.
I cannot stress it enough, anyone in CCP reading this should really make a tutorial for joining a squad for new players if there isn't one already. Maybe showcase the benefits of having a Logi, heavy, assault, and scout on the team and the benefits of working together, dropping an OB.

Fingers like to point at the most (presumably) useless loadout in the squad the minute everything goes to h3ll. Scouts do recon/infiltration. Sentinels guard points and lay down suppressive fire. Assaults are the mainstay of most effective squads. Logis provide various types of support. Commandos, well, add to fire-power, but that's where it usually ends. And are not very survivable without a 'living' squad. I gotta say, if someone told me kick the Commando I would have to drop out of the squad or use a clone to switch suits. I kinda like being able to drop an uplink, hive, pull out a needle or put a rep tool on someone and then pull out my sniper rifle and get some kills out of guys camped in obvious places sniping at my squad and then quick switch to a rifle of my choosing to put the heat on someone at a closer range advancing on my position or running behind cover trying to take me out.
It may not have the raw HP of a standard Heavy but they fill a role that needs to be filled on the battlefield just the same. Commandos are awesome. That said I also like scouts, heavies, sentinels, logis, assaults, and vehicle pilots, all suits are good ones if they can be used to complement the squad and increase their potential for greatness.
I run every type of suit in the game in some form or another. I encourage all players to spec into what they enjoy, its a game and if you enjoy what you are doing it is well worth it.

If I could join a squad that wouldnt talk or take 15 minutes in between matches I might play with others, buuut, I can't, so I dont lol. I don't. Neither do Dreis' squads. You can't imagine the amount of surprise I felt when I saw my name in your post. lol I like to wait around 5 mins between matches and talk You never actually speak though. Get a mic! I never speak either, after 3 years of use it broke and tbh I get more and better co-operation out of squad orders than anything, maybe you missed the part of the post indicating that this topic is about doing just that. Not all of us have a cave we can sit in, alot of us have kids running around and screaming or live in noisy neighbourhoods where yelling, sirens and violent behaviour is the norm.
Mics are really optional and I suggest you get over it friend because let me tell you, there is nothing quite like peace and quiet from squad mates as I listen for people sneaking up behind me, rather than all sorts of garbage noise from everyone else's houses.
